Yes, lab-grown diamonds are certified. Just like natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds can receive an official diamond certificate that verifies their authenticity, quality, and grading. Certification is essential when purchasing a lab-grown diamond, as it ensures transparency and protects buyers from misleading or incomplete information.
A diamond certificate is an independent assessment issued by a gemological laboratory. It confirms that the stone is a real diamond and provides a detailed evaluation of its characteristics.
For lab-grown diamonds, certification is especially important because it:
Confirms the diamond is not a simulant or imitation
Clearly states that the diamond was created in a laboratory
Provides objective quality grading
Builds trust and long-term confidence
Without certification, it is impossible to accurately assess a lab-grown diamond’s quality or value.
A lab-grown diamond certificate follows the same internationally recognised grading standards as natural diamonds. It is based on the 4Cs:
Cut – How well the diamond reflects light
Colour – The colour grade of the stone
Clarity – Internal and external characteristics
Carat Weight – The diamond’s weight
In addition, lab-grown diamond certificates always include origin disclosure, clearly stating that the diamond is laboratory-grown. Many stones also feature a laser inscription that matches the certificate number.
The most respected gemological laboratories in the world certify lab-grown diamonds, including GIA and IGI.
GIA applies very strict grading standards and is globally recognised for precision
IGI is the leading authority in lab-grown diamond certification and is widely used in fine jewelry
Both certificates are internationally accepted and trusted.
NOTE: At My Diamond Ring, we provide IGI certificates exclusively for lab-grown diamonds and GIA certificates for natural diamonds. This approach ensures a clear distinction between the two and helps our customers easily understand the origin and certification of each diamond.
The structure of the certificate is nearly identical. The key difference is transparency about origin.
A lab-grown diamond certificate will always specify:
That the diamond is laboratory-grown
The growth method, such as CVD or HPHT
Unique identification details
This ensures a clear distinction between natural and lab-grown diamonds at all times.
